Cotton - A conscious choice!

Cotton is a great choice! Next to the multitude of plastic mats that are found in every big box store in America cotton yoga rugs look like a saint in comparison. Although that is not entirely the case they are an amazing option and are becoming more and more mainstream as time ticks on. If you are considering a cotton yoga mat here are some ideas for you to digest and decide what option is specifically for you.

If you look online you will come across a few organic cotton yoga mats. The thing about it is, is that some of these mats although made for yoga, seem to be for specific practices or therapies in yoga. These mats are fluffy and really large, which is not the description of your typical yoga mat. The first is the New Bean Organic Cotton yoga mat, which is priced at $175. Personally this looks great if I was doing Thai massage or restorative yoga, but not my typical class. Not to mention choosing to spend that much on the mat would be another question worth discussing. Alternatively there is the YogaAccessories organic cotton yoga mat at $50, which is far less in comparison, but seems to fit a similar bill. The problem with this one is it doesn't have uplifting reviews either.

So the main options that are available if you search online are fairly strictly for use in therapies and restorative situation. This is unlikely to serve the average yoga practitioner, so what is next? Well cotton yoga rugs that have been around for decades are actually a good choice for many. They are not currently trendy or popular but still very traditional and work great for yoga in many ways. You can find these in organic options as well as regular options and their prices are not out of this world either.

For me, not being a massage therapist, a Thai massage therapist or a practitioner of any kind of therapy I really just consider the cotton yoga rugs as an eco yoga mat option They are fairly easy to track down since they are one of the more traditional forms of mats that are out there. You can find them in organic cotton as well as unbleached cotton and if you are really lucky in Egyptian cotton, which is the finest of cottons out there. Which ever you chose you will be making a great choice for your yoga practice as well as the environment since cotton is renewable and also biodegradable.

Reading about the options that are available may have, or may not have, brought you to any conclusions about cotton yoga mats and your personal yoga practice. In summary of cotton, the good things are that it is healthy, breathable, absorbent and nice to work on. Although it is imperfect in the practices of cultivation due to pollution of our water systems with heavy fertilization and pesticides it is a renewable resource. You can also find options that are 100% organic too, which makes it even better.
